The Dyle

The Dyle River originates in Houtain-le-Val, a former municipality within the Genappe area. The main towns and villages it passes through are, from upstream to downstream: Court-Saint-Etienne, Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve, Wavre, Leuven, and Mechelen.

Every year, as part of Cleanliness Week and Walloon Water Days, floating barriers are installed at various locations on the Dyle River for about ten days to collect waste.

In addition to these targeted actions, the City of Wavre can rely on the non-profit organization Aer Aqua Terra, whose mission is to clean up polluted sites such as rivers. Several times a year, they spend days cleaning up the Dyle River with the help of numerous volunteers.

Although it is not currently navigable, the Dyle River is occasionally opened to navigation every two years. A kayak trip is organized by the Dyle-Gette River Contract and some of the municipalities along its course. This provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the protection of nature, flora, fauna, and the essential preservation of waterways.
