Jean and Alice
This show, called "The Game of Jean and Alice", is performed every five years in Cardinal Square
Mercier. A monumental play, it celebrates the presentation of the Charter of Liberties and
Communal liberties granted to the burghers in 1222. This historical episode was recorded under the
in the form of a play in 1954, when the city finally got its long-awaited carillon.
was born from the imagination of Abbot Jean Pensis, the writer Auguste Brasseur-Capart and the
Musician Auguste du Point Del Sart. The three men imagine a show together
a grand spectacle blending song, dance, and spoken word. The 500 participants in this Game of
Jean and Alice, sometimes main actors, sometimes supporting actors or extras, move about
a scene where the setting of a medieval castle rises. Even the Church of Saint John the Baptist and the
Chimes occupy an important place in this extraordinary scenography.
